I'm using Vista Business (32-bit) and Outlook 2007. I have recently had to
create a new pst file to resolve a problem with syncing with my PPC and as a result I've lost access to my Master Category list. Here's what's happened so far. I created a new pst file and called it 'test.pst' (friendly name 'My Test'). I kept my existing Outlook profile, to keep my email accounts intact, but made test.pst the default file. When I then opened Outlook, I had the 'My Test' folder set and (below it) a set of Personal Folders which contained the original Outlook.pst data. Folder by folder, I moved the contents of the original folders to the folders of the new pst file, till the original folders were all empty, then closed the 'Personal Folders' set of folders. This all worked fine, as did syncing the PPC with the new file. However, I only realised today that new contacts only have the default 'colour' categories available to allocate to them. My contacts have retained all their categories, but when I open a contact, then click 'Categorize'/'All categories', all the user-created categories say 'Not in Master Category List' (MCL). When I've migrated previous versions of Outlook (to a new PC, for example), I've gone into the registry to migrate the MCL so I went there to see what was in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\O utlook\Categories. There are two entries: Default/Reg_SZ/(Value not set) and Master List/Reg_Binary/42 00 69 00….(lots of data here). When I right-click on Master List and select 'Modify' another window opens and in the right hand column I can clearly see the names of my user-created categories; each letter is separated by a dot, categories are separated by a semicolon. However, according to http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/olcat.asp 'Outlook 2007 does not use the registry for a master category list'. So how do I retrieve the MCL from the original pst without buying a 3rd party application to do this and a load of other stuff I don't need? |

![]() Without a third-party tool you can make the old PST the default one in order to get access to you old master category list. Then assign all of your categories to one email. Switch back and make the new PST the default again. Select the email, click the Categorize button, then All Categories. Select one category that isn't in your master list, click New, then OK. You have to repeat this for every category. -- Best regards Michael Bauer - MVP Outlook : Outlook Categories?
