I'm not sure if this is the correct form, but half of my issues is Outlook
related. I would like to control what contacts get sync'd to my mobile 6.1 when using ActiveSync 4.5 I only want contacts with phone numbers transfered not contacts that only have e-mail addresses. Yes, I know I can e-mail from my phone but I have no desire to do so. Is there anyway to do this within Outlook 2007? Thanks to Microsoft's wisdom of not having Outlook Express work with Activesync, I had to purchase Outlook 2007. For what I paid for this software, it's going to do what I want it to do. |

![]() For the sync ActiveSync is responsible, not Outlook. As far as I know, you can only sync the default contacts folder, and you cannot set ActiveSync to filter contacts before syncing. So you'd have to move the contacts you don't want to get to your device to another contacts folder. -- Best regards Michael Bauer - MVP Outlook : Outlook Categories? It will work only with the default Contacts folder. You can choose to sync all contacts, only specific contacts, or only specific categories of contacts. If you want to sync only those contacts that have phone numbers, then create a category named, for example, "HasNumber" and assign it to those contacts that have phone numbers. Adjust ActiveSync to include only that category. Alternatively, simply select in ActiveSync's options only those contacts that have phone numbers. -- Brian Tillman [MVP-Outlook] |

Brian - I'm sure you know a lot more than I do about OL, but I think you'll
find the ability to filter contacts by category is device-specific. With my set-up, for example, (a Sprint HTC Mogul running WM6.1 and syncing with Outlook 2007 running under Vista syncing via Windows Mobile Device Centre) there is no way to filter Contacts by category. Before this set up, I was using the same PDA with XP/Activesync/Outlook 2003 but the situation was the same. The only way to control which contacts get synced with the phone from Outlook is to decide which ones to put in the default Contacts folder - that's it. I have had Sprint and HTC confirm that I can't filter contacts by category with this device and it was a big disappointment - previous PDA's were able to do this. Perhaps this is the case with Perry and Michael's devices also, and why Michael is not seeing it as an option. Hi Michael
I realise now that my post was ambiguous - apologies. What I meant to convey is that with *some* devices, including mine, you can't filter Contacts by category as part of the sync process, which is what Perry was hoping to do and what Brian told him is possible. I was letting Brian know that, as I understand it, whether you can filter Contacts by category in Activesync depends on which PDA/phone device you have. Like you say, it is possible to filter contacts which are already on the phone by category, but I think Perry was asking a different question... Perry and I are trying to limit the number (and which) contacts get synced in the first place. I have over 2000 contacts in Outlook (which my previous PDA handled perfectly, or I had the option to only sync certain categories) but Sprint have told me I need to limit this to a maximum of 500 on the phone for it not to crash, and because with this device there is no option to filter by category as you sync, I have to filter them first in Outlook so that up to 500 that I want synced with the phone are in the Outlook default Contacts directory (and the remainder have to go in a subdirectory, otherwise Activesync attempts to transfer them all). ![]() Thanks, this time I understand who's asked what :-) I don't think it depends on the device, maybe it does on the version of Outlook? -- Best regards Michael Bauer - MVP Outlook : Outlook Categories?
