Default CATEGORIES vs. DISTRIBUTION LISTS

I have noticed in several other discussion threads that on this site that the
use of
categories can have advantages over distribution lists. Is there some place
one can read about the advantages?

basically, its easier to update the DL because you just have to add or
remove categories. It's also easier if you need to send a message to some of
people in the dynamic DL, but not all.
