Default Personal Folders properties returns a "object not found" error

XPSP2, Outlook 2003
In the course of trying to follow MS help on removing duplicate Personal
Folders (PF), I performed the following actions:

1. Attemped to close the spurious PF, but that option was grayed out.

2. Changed the "Deliver mail to..." option in /Tools/E-mail Accounts/ to the
"other" PF, exited Outlook, restarted Outlook, menu option to close spurious
PF still grayed out.

3. Right-click spurious PF, choose Properties..., clicked [Advanced...],
renamed the spurious PF to "Extra Personal Folders", OK, OK. Went into
/Tools/E-mail accounts/"Deliver mail to...", and ensured that mail was being
delivered to the right PF. Exit, restarted Outlook, menu option to close
spurious PF still grayed out.

4. Rebooted computer, launched Outlook -- now both PFs are named "Extra PF",
and I cannot get into properties of either one. When I click [Advanced...],
I get a error dialog "The operation failed. An object could not be found"

With OL closed.
In Control Panel Mail Applet
Create a new profile, add the required pst and accounts.
You have corrupted your origonal Profile.
