Default Messages view as read before I get a chance to look at them

This is strange! I have the reading pane on and when I click on a message and
than click back off it it nornmally changes to 'read'. But now I can go to
lunch and when I get back I have 5 or 10 email and thay have all been 'read'.
If I get a message I leave it and after a little bit it will show as read. I
have outlook 2003 exchange.
