Default Outlook 2003 -mail stays in outbox

I'm trying to use outlook 2003 for the first time, never bothered before,
finally got my SKY email recognised by it, but my messages stay in the
outbox, have checked all the advice in help but I never get beyond seeing
"preparing to send/receive" in the progress bar.
Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks

There should be an error tab when you view your send/receive progress. When
your send/receive attempt fails, there will be an error message (and number)
that you'll see if you click on that tab. The contents of the error message
will be the key to the problem.

Commonly what happens is that you're trying to send mail without
authenticating to your SMTP server properly. You should double-check to make
sure it's set to use the same password as your POP3 server.

Another common cause is that your send/receive poll is set to too short a
period (try 10 minutes) and yet another is configuring antivirus to actively
scan incoming and outgoing emails.

No error message,POP3 configured correctly,send/receive set to 10mins,my
antivirus is McAfee , still says preparing to send/receive in progress bar,
and if I right click on this and on details it says completed. tried dragging
from outbox to drafts and clicking send again but ended up just the same.
Anymore ideas please?

Disable McAfee email scanning.

If you open Outlook in safe mode, does this behaviour continue?

Start Run outlook.exe /safe

Note that there is a space between outlook.exe and /safe

Don't know how to do that, I'm on Windows Vista, you wouldn't believe how
long it's taken me to get this far!

Vista doesn't have the run button, it's called Start Search.

So click on the Start button (lower left-hand corner), look for Start Search
and click on that. Then type in the command I gave you. Then hit enter. If
typed in correctly, it will open Outlook in safe mode.

This disables any add ins that may be interfering with its ability to
perform normally (like your send/receive issue). If Outlook opens up and can
do a send/receive successfully, then we know there is something interfering
with Outlook. If not, at least we ruled that out.

Might have cracked it! One of my outgoing messages has arrived, another is
"being transmitted" so maybe!!!!! I went back to advanced mail settings and
I appeared to have my email address in twice, one with (1) after it.Deleted
one of them and things started moving, hope that's it, if not I'll be back on
here. Thanks for your replies.
