Default Outlook 2000 won't open

Can't open Outlook. Everything else but. Any suggestions?

I took a computer out of service and am bringing up a new machine. I
installed Office 2000 on the new machine (WIN XP) but Outlook won't open (I
get a message "cannot find default e-mail folder"). The other Office
components all function. I do not use Outlook for e-mail, only for my
calendar and contacts. I do not find any file named outcmd, even searching
the hidden and system folders.

Close Outlook. Find and rename outcmd.dat to .old. (If using Windows 2000
or XP, you will need to enable searching hidden and system folders.)

Once you have done so, reopen Outlook and it should open fine. You will
need to rebuild any custom toolbars or customizations as the file outcmd.dat
controls how the toolbars display. When it becomes corrupted, it will cause
Outlook to hang because it cannot create the toolbars that you expect.

Post all replies to the group to keep the discussion intact. Due to
the (insert latest virus name here) virus, all mail sent to my personal
account will be deleted without reading.

After furious head-scratching, mdfisher asked this group:

| Outlook has been working fine, then all of a sudden, it won't open.
| The splash screen stays on and locks up. I have to ctrl-alt-delete,
| end task to close it. I have been downloading my email from the
| earthlink/webmail site for a few weeks now. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Exactly what happens when you try? Did you configure a mail profile and
define an account? What version of Windows are you using?
