Unhappy e-mail link to website failure

I have a problem in as much that I am unable to activate website links from within received e-mails.

I had no such problem when I was using the anti-virus program AVG 7.5, but since I upgraded to the AVG 8.0 version this problem has arisen. AVG 8.0 has not only anti-virus facilities, but also a firewall, safe site scanning etc. I am using Microsoft Outlook as my e-mail client and Mozilla Firefox as my web browser and running Windows XP with Service Pack 3 on a Compac Presario 2500 laptop.

I have presented this problem to Support at AVG and received a reply with a number of steps to test the software. None of these were successful in rectifying the problem.

The blocking of the links, I feel, is most likely an action of the AVG firewall, (I have disabled Microsoft’s firewall so there should be no conflict). All links within the e-mails are blocked and all that happens when I attempt to connect is that when the cursor is over the link I get a ‘no entry’ symbol arising and if I click on the link I get a window appearing entitled ‘Select Link Browser’. If I select Firefox and click ‘open’ in this window all that happens is that the start page of Firefox launches and nothing more. All this has been the case for the last two weeks, until today. Now, when clicking on a link in an e-mail, there is no ‘no entry’ sign arising, but the start page of Mozilla Firefox is launched, but nothing further occurs. The URL of the link is not displayed in the bar and no connection to it is made.

I do not know enough to be able to pursue this problem further. Can anybody help me?

Regards, Bluesman
