Hard drive failed: Extract email from outlook

Hey all,

I am hoping that someone can help with the dilemma i am facing. My HDD is on its way out and i can no longer get a successful boot in windows(Dual Boot on different HDD's). I need to access my emails that are stored in Outlook on the dodgy HDD (i know that if the emails are damaged then i'm goosed). I can load into my other windows installation and go to the office program iles folder but i think the emails are stored as a .dbx file or something. Its there are (free) way to get my emails out?

Thanks in advance,

Tinochelli

you didn't say which o/s you are asking about but i will give you the instructions for XP. on c:/ or the relevent drive go to documents and settings then your profile, local settings (you have to show hidden files and folders to see this folder) application data\ microsoft\outlook. in there you will see outlook office data file and that is where your data is stored. hope this helps

Yes thanks i have accessed the folder (had to change permissions) and found the following files:

1. outcmd.dat
2. Outlook.NK2
3. Outlook.srs
4. Outlook.xml

how do i import the data file into a new installation of outlook? I have checked the options available for import but see nothing for .dat files.

Thanks

I think i may have bn getting muddled up. I think i needed the .pst file which stores emails/addresses. What data is stored in the .dat file?

Thanks in advance,

Then copy the pst files to Documents on the new drive, and within Outlook,
open them

Outlook uses pst, not dbx - outlook express uses dbx.

Do you have the full Office array installed? If so, there's an email program
called Microsoft Outlook Express. I forgot how to do it now but there's a way
to archive messages from that program, and you can transfer everything from
OE to MOE. Try it.

Not sure about this but go to Microsoft Outlook (another email client) and
transfer everything to it. MSOutlook has the capability (I think) to archive
messages.

Microsoft Office does not include Outlook Express. Windows does.

Sorry to argue with you but Office has an email program named Microsoft
Office Outlook. It and Outlook Express are often confused. I guess that's
what I did.
