Outlook wont open, process running

I have a similar problem to one posted 22/7/08 solved by Alias but mine
still happens.
MS Outlook continues running as a process when terminated as shown by Task
Manager; it disappears from the Applications tab but remains under the
Processes tab.
If Outlook is reloaded, two copies appear under Processes (albeit the second
with only small memory usage) but nothing under Applications.

If the two copies are killed (End Process in Task Manager) and Outlook is
then reloaded again, I'm informed that Outlook failed to load properly and
do I want it loading in Safe Mode now. Outlook loads successfully in either
mode, but still leaves a copy of itself behind under Processes when
terminated.

This is all running under Windows XP Pro SP2 and Office SP3. I have norton
360 but this problem didn't happen just after this.
Have moved the pst file to other computers and exported it but doesn't
occurr there so appears related to Office 2003 on this computer. Similar non
terminating occurrs with winword that has multiple cppies running as
precesses but function is not affected.
Did what was suggested and removed Addins from
"Tools/Options/Other/Advanced Options/Com Add-ins or Service
Options?" (including "Itunes Helper") no help. Rebooted twice.
When I reboot or terminate the extra outlook processes outlook opens. If I
try to open outlook a third time without doing above it fails and anothing
process starts.
Don't use the animated helper? Do not have Junk Mail and Deleted Items empty
automatically.
Do have autobackup but present for 12 months no issue.
Please help re something else causing non closure.

I removed from outlook but no help.
I could uninstall but I think it may be more than itunes.

Having looked at other programs I find that winword, excel, MYOB all have
multiple processes (adding one each time you open them but never
deleting/closing.
Other programs do close and remove from process.
Processes active svchost.exe about 10 copies (some local, some system some
network)
Have tried to disable norton but no change to CPU activity which seems
excessive with no programs eccept task maager working

Any thoughts

I don't know what you've tried so far and what has and hasn't worked....

I would start with Detect and Repair (office diagnostics in Office 2007)
Are there any applications that access outlook data? PDAs are most common,
but other programs may access the data, including vista's sidebar gadgets.
360 could very well be the problem - especially if installed any updates
recently. Always disable email scanning - its not necessary.

I have a problem with Outlook 2003. It opens quite well when I first boot up,
but the fails either from the shortcut on the toolbar or directly through
programs. I have done a diagnostic repair as you have suggested and disabled
email sanning in 360 and it still occurs. Any suggestions.

Fails in what manner? If you receive any error messages, what is the exact
text? Is anything written to the Event log?

No mesage is received. The cusor appears that it is reacting and then nothing
occurs. After this happend the only way I can open Outlook is to reboot.
Other Office components appear to be not affected.

Have you looked at the shortcut and verified it's a valid shortcut? Is
outlook open or closed when you try to open it from other programs (using
the File, Send to menu?). If outlook is closed, look in Tasks manager to
verify it is closed.
