Default Multiple copies of same message in archive

Have Outlook 2003. At times when I import the archived file I find that
there are multiple copies of the same message. I have to (1) delete the
archive file, (2) painstakenly eliminate the duplicate messages, and then (3)
create a "fresh" archive file. Is there some setting that can be used to
prevent multiple copies of the same message in the archive file (pst)? Thank
you.
