Default why does Outlook ignore my default mail client?

I have a new computer and am moving from Office 2000. I've set up my emial
accounts, including the default acct, and Outlook keeps messaging that there
are no default mail clients. when I manually run send/receive, they work
fine. What's wrong?

You do not select the default in Outlook. It is selected in Control Panel,
Internet Options, Programs. Or if you have vista on the new computer, select
the Start button, Default Programs.
