Default Rules to categorize mail OL2007

I have Outlook 2007. I have setup a rule to categorize my mail when it
arrives in the Inbox. Inexplicably this fails. It fails in spite of the fact
that if I run the rule manually it works perfectly. I have the rule set with
the highest priority. Does anyone know why this fails?

Jerry,

My 2007 experience is that message rules cannot be applied to HTTP accounts
and have to be applied manually to POP accounts.

how does the rule read?

I assume you mean this located in the Rule description text box?

"Apply this rule after the message arrives from assign it to the z
category"

Like I said, if I run the rule manually it works perfectly.

You experience is correct on HTTP, not on POP3. POP3, provided the entire
message is downloaded, should work fine on download.

Aye, there is the big snag. You have to download the whole message for the
message rules to be applied! Better do it manually before scanning the
messages,

Well, rules really aren't intended to be an anti-spam solution, so if that
is your need, then yes, might as well go through the headers and delete what
you want deleted. But for other purposes, like moving or tagging messages
with categories, the full message is required whether you do it via rules or
manually.

Diane,

Yes I agree with your point, but well designed rules are one of the best
anti-spam tools.

Is this just an OL2007 issue or an issue w/categorization? I've never had
any issues using rules prior to this version. Other rules run just fine that
are set to process items as they hit the Inbox. The emails that are
downloading --that I setup a rule on-- are work related emails that are only
a few K in size. If one must go to Tools | Rules & Alerts select the rule
to run from the dialog box and then run it, well, doesn't that remove
several layers of usefulness from the feature? One of the cool things about
a rule is that it run automatically --at least it was one of the cool things
about it.
