Sender used a recall attachment, can track each opening
I'm not a computer guru, please bear w/me.
Here's the story: Email was received in inbox. I did not open it. I forwarded email to several of our household inboxes. Later in the day I opened an email from the same address. It was a recall of the previous email. Not your typical recall (I'd never received one before but thru tons of testing I know what an outlook recall should do). This one is an attachment file on a blank email. When I opened the attachment the recall window popped up. I hit the 'x'. It did recall the original unopened email. However, I still hold the recall in my inbox (along with the saved versions of the original email). I was way too curious (& P.Oed) about how on earth the person did it to delete the original. Now after a couple of weeks, I found out there's tracking on the attachment. Whenever you open it the sender is sent an email. These sent emails do not show up in my Outlook Sent Items folder. Sender has a temper, an itchy finger, and is a geek. I've tried to duplicate this email, but can't. I've even purchased 3 month subscription to email tracking to see if that made duplication possible. It did not. (It did introduce me to the world of tracking email...scary what people can do). My spouse is a guru w/out time to deal w/this, so I was sent here. I am concerned. I would like to inform others in our family of this person's capabilities, and am determined to find out how this was accomplished. Questions: How do you send a recall as an attachment? How can tracking be possible on just the attachment? Why doesn't my sent folder show the tracked emails back to this sender? I've looked all of this stuff up on the net & am stuck. No info on attachment sent recalls. No info on tracking just attachments. No real info on why the sent items don't show up (person does not have CRM-that's the only thing that came up at Microsoft). I appreciate your knowledge & assistance! |

Tracking information messages are hidden messages. You can see them with OutlookSpy (http://www.dimastr.com/outspy/). See this: http://www.outlook-tips.net/howto/delete_rr.htm -- Brian Tillman |

Brian, Thank you for the assistance. I installed OutlookSpy, have the toolbar in Outlook and have a quick question. Once I click on the Sent Items folder, do you have a simple list of steps on how I can view hidden items (like the tracking emails being sent everytime I try to open the recalled attachment). I tried many different sections of the Outlook file, and drilled down to various folders, but can't seem to 'see' any hidden items. Thank you for any help you can provide. Re-read the very explicit instructions on this page:

I did read that website several times, but unfortunately, that site
deals with Read Receipts. These are 'recall successes and failures' being sent via email, yet I can't find them in Sent Items even using Outlookspy. I did a test and looked at my outlook.pst file before and after a recall notice was sent out from my Outlook, and the filesize did NOT go up, leading me to believe that Outlook literally sent the recall notice but did not record it ANYWHERE in the pst file. Does that sound accurate? Thank you for your continued help!
