Default Outlook 'send/receive' button produces msg: "the operation failed"

MS Outlook

I can not depress my SEND/RECEIVE button without receiving the message "the
operation failed".
This has only happened today and although I automatically receive and can
send msgs (as predetermined my pc checks every 5 mins) I can not use
manually.

Driving me crazy. Can someone help me?

BJ
