Default Is MS going to perm disable Hotmail in OE 6 for everyone now?

As a long-time user, I was sent the message that I would still be
able to use OE 6 with Hotmail. I even got the email saying that
MS had decided to extend support for Hotmail functionality in OE
6 due to customer preferences.

I thought "Hey! That's cool! I'm golden!"

Then suddenly within the last week (I think about that long) my
OE 6 gives me those error messages I had posted about earlier
whenever I try to access Hotmail in OE 6.

I didn't get any email or other indications that there was any
policy shift, and I can still check my Hotmail online in my
browser.

But I'm starting to worry that MS may have decided to completely
drop OE 6 support, even though I have not seen anything in the
press or my in box about this happening.

Does anybody know exactly what is going on?

I am so totally used to OE 6 and I use it with OE-QuoteFix, which
is about the best Outlook Express utility I've ever tried, and
I'd hate to lose that functionality.

So I guess I just want to know what up. Is it just a glitch
related to their LIVE rollout and once it's fixed, I can get back
to reading my Hotmail accounts offline in OE 6?

Or is it never coming back?

I look forward to any helpful replies.

Thank you very much.

Always reply to your original thread, please:
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...19e130aafb582d

The last official word on accessing free Hotmail accounts in OE dates from
May-08:
http://emailsupport.spaces.live.com/...708!5745.entry

We expect such access to continue until January 2009, at minimum. Keep in
mind that such free access has always been considered a "beta service" with
no support whatsoever.

I've had no problems accessing my free Hotmail accounts in OE, Paul. That
being said, there are many recent posts in Internet Mail, MSN Discussion,
and Windows Live Mail newsgroups from users who are having problems similar
to yours.

As I said earlier, most of the time the problem is on Hotmail's end, not
yours. Until the problem automagically clears up, access your account at
www.mail.live.com.

Microsoft makes, on average, one major change to Hotmail every year. If
you don't keep up, you may not be able to access your account. If you
have a Hotmail Plus account, and only if it is a Windows Live Hotmail
Plus account (not an MSN Hotmail Plus account), you get access to their
POP and SMTP mail hosts. Support for Outlook Express died late in 2002.
The last functional update was in Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2 (with
only security updates since then). OE is a dead product and has been
for 6 years. Microsoft keeps changing their Hotmail service. It's time
you reconsider which e-mail client you will use with your Hotmail
service, like switching to Windows Live Mail, or consider if a different
e-mail provider might not be a better choice, like one that does NOT use
a Microsoft-proprietary e-mail protocol but instead an RFC-compliant
one, like POP, IMAP, and SMTP.

DAV commands that OE understands will cease to work, if not already for
your account. That was the old HTTP protocol used by OE to communicate
with Microsoft's HTTP mail hosts. Microsoft is not only discontinuing
the old MSN Hotmail accounts and forcing their users to the Windows Live
Hotmail interface but they are also dropping DAV and moving to their new
Deltasync protocol. So even if you fix it now, it will die in just a
month or two, anyway. Start to plan your change now.

BTW, why would you not just use my DudeBoyz nick instead of a
first name? After learning some hard lessons, I would really not
want personal information to be used. I was pretty Naive about
it before, hence my preference to stick to the DudeBoyz nick.

I shall do so in future. However, you should know that the bulk your
newsgroup posting history is available to all comers via Google Groups
archive [1] and that as recently as September 2007 you were posting under
your full real name (which I did not use), not the Dudeboyz alias [2].

PS: I would strongly recommend that you munge your Hotmail address (change
it to, e.g., ) in OE Tools | Accounts | News | [news
account(s)] | Properties | General | Email address and Reply address.

Thanks. I was just hopelessly naive and when I apparently
angered someone when I was discussing Digital Cameras no less, I
learned what it was to be targeted.

It was foolish of me to be so ill-informed and I've paid the
price - repeatedly - for liking one brand of camera over another.

I greatly appreciate the help and advice.

I may end up giving up the Hotmail account if I can't check it in
OE 6 any more because in part, I could avoid the hassle I've
heaped on myself.

I've had the account for so long, it just bugs me that I might
have to give in and give it up for either reason. But maybe it's
for the best if MS does cut OE 6 support for Hotmail accounts.

Anyway, if someone is able to find out what is going on with the
Hotmail in OE 6 stuff, I'd like to know just for my own
edification, so I hope they post it somewhere where I can read
it.

Best wishes, and have a good weekend.

Thank you for your well thought out and helpful response. I do
appreciate it.

Now that Gmail is out of Beta, maybe I should try switching over
completely to one of those accounts. I'm not sure how Google can
offer free POP3 and IMAP, but I've been told they do and that you
can use any regular email application to access your account,
which means you don't have to do it via the web if you do not
wish to.

Maybe hanging on to Hotmail is more about nostalgia than anything
else. I've had Hotmail since way, way back - I think before MS
had anything to do with it. And I have always liked that you can
use it in Outlook Express 6, plus I am very fond of the
OE-QuoteFix utility. If I go Gmail, I guess I can still use
OE-QuoteFix with OE 6 and life will be okie.

Again - thanks much.

Default Is MS going to perm disable Hotmail in OE 6 for everyone now?

I wanted to make a follow-up post to this group, and since Comcast
stopped providing Newsgroup services to all of their customers, I
thought I'd try Google Groups. I wanted the solution to be listed
here for people who do a search and have a similar problem.

So, here is the information I discovered about accessing Hotmail
accounts with Outlook Express 6 now that LIVE.COM has "gone live", as
it we

Microsoft made some changes that might require adjustments to be made
in order to properly access your account.

Since Outlook Express 6 is tied to IE 6's security settings and I have
since my Internet Zone locked down for safety instead of being left at
Default (in the Internet Options Security dialog), I had to do the
following in order to get it to work again:

I had to first add *.LIVE.COM to my TRUSTED SITES Zone (in the
Internet Options Security dialog)

I then had to enter the LIVE.COM domain where it says Address Of Web
Site in the Per Site Privacy Actions dialog and click on the Allow
button (or press ALT-A) and confirm that via the OK button.

Once those two specific addtions were made, I was again able to access
my account.

So now, according to the source I found, there are now a total of 4
domains that need to be entered as described above:

*.HOTMAIL.COM
*.LIVE.COM
*.MSN.COM
*.PASSPORT.COM

I already had Hotmail.com, MSN.com and Passport.com entered into my
Trusted Zone and configured as Always Allow in my Privacy settings.

The new requirement for me was adding that 4th domain - Live.com.

I don't remember receiving any emailed instructions from Microsoft
about this change perhaps being necessary, hence my confusion.

However, if they did send instructions out and I failed to notice,
then it's my bad, and I apologize for going nuts about Hotmail access
via OE 6.

Regardless, I wanted to say thank you for those who did attempt to
help. Perhaps this info will help others as well.

Happy Mailing,

DB

We covered this in your original (the first of three) thread with the
subject "Outlook Express 6 suddenly fails with Hotmail account" (13 Nov-08).
See
http://groups.google.com/group/micro...896b13229f4a95

I do not have any of those domains running in Trusted Sites zone. I have
"Allowed cookies" for hotmail.com and live.com (only, but I probably only
need live.com now). I have not had any problems accessing my free Hotmail
account(s) in OE or IE.

You can access this newsgroup in OE via the free MS newsserver by clicking
on the following link:
