Recently , started just less than 2 weeks ago , I started having troubles
with my Outlook Express on my main Windows XP Pro system. I was posting messages but they never appeared. I then did my usual test of sending a message to myself. That way you can verify messages are going to your mail sever and the trouble is elsewhere in the network. I have 3 different E-mail addresses on 3 different servers and providers. If I use Yahoo , which means I am in their web site and not on my Outlook Express , and send test messages to the other addresses both servers bounced for several days then the network trouble went away. Theses troubles started right after we got several urgent updates to Windows XP. After Several days the Yahoo created messages started coming through fine with no network bounces but the ones created in Outlook Express did not. I thought I had a virus or worm so I pulled out my upgraded newer 160 GB drive and put back in my older 40 GB and the e-mails originated via Outlook Express worked. I then tried using the 40 GB drive to test and clean up the 160 GB drive. After I did all the latest Windows XP updates to the 40 GB drive it now has the same trouble. I then tried my weather computer which also has Windows XP and it also does not work. An old Windows 98 computer does work. The computer I switched drives on uses Trend Micro Anti Virus software but the Weather Computer uses Symantec. Next I tried the full Outlook in my Office 2000 and it works with no troubles. I then downloaded Thunderbird and it also works. The Trend Micro anti virus is also the filtering software for Office Outlook and it works fine. I can send messages in those programs to myself and they come right back but Outlook Express gives no errors but it appears the message never go. If I deliberately put in a wrong address it does give me a bounce message. What it boils down to it appears a recent security fix has messed up Outlook Express. I verified that none of my E-mail addresses are in a blocked senders list and a few messages do get out. I have talked to several people that are all saying their E-mail is messed up because they can't send messages. By the way I spent 22 years in a technical support group so I'm very specific in my testing. |

If I use Yahoo , which means I am in their web site and not on my Outlook Express , and send test messages to the other addresses both servers bounced for several days then the network trouble went away. Sounds like multiple problems. Theses troubles started right after we got several urgent updates to Windows XP. Which may, or may not have anything to do with the problems. After Several days the Yahoo created messages started coming through fine with no network bounces but the ones created in Outlook Express did not. Which may be related to configuration issues in the client (or not). FWIW, I just sent myself a test message from a 'pacbell.net' account, which uses 'smtp.att.yahoo.com:465', to a 'live.com' account. I used MS Outlook Express 6. Initially, the email would not even go out; I kept getting a password pop-up. To give you an idea of how long it has been since I used this combination of client and server, I re-entered my password, using the one I know is currently correct. The email was successfully sent. I had not used this client since before I updated the 'pacbell.net' ("at&t Yahoo! HSI") account password. I thought I had a virus or worm so I pulled out my upgraded newer 160 GB drive and put back in my older 40 GB and the e-mails originated via Outlook Express worked. I then tried my weather computer which also has Windows XP and it also does not work. An old Windows 98 computer does work. The computer I switched drives on uses Trend Micro Anti Virus software but the Weather Computer uses Symantec. I never set up an AV program to scan email. Client side email scanning for viruses is a redundant check (your AV scanner will catch viral attachments without scanning the email), and prone to problems (your AV email scanner uses a local proxy to interact between the client, and the server. Things can go very wrong with that interaction.) Next I tried the full Outlook in my Office 2000 and it works with no troubles. I then downloaded Thunderbird and it also works. The Trend Micro anti virus is also the filtering software for Office Outlook and it works fine. I can send messages in those programs to myself and they come right back but Outlook Express gives no errors but it appears the message never go. I verified that none of my E-mail addresses are in a blocked senders list and a few messages do get out. I have talked to several people that are all saying their E-mail is messed up because they can't send messages. After you send the email, does it show up in the "Sent Items" folder? If so then the message submission server got the email. What happens after that is completely out of your hands. By the way I spent 22 years in a technical support group so I'm very specific in my testing. Pretty much irrelevant. If you don't understand how email servers and clients interact (and most people don't; theoretically, they shouldn't have to. It should all be very transparent), you won't really know how to test, or what to look for. The questions I have, unanswered because you omitted the information: Are you using your ISP SMTP message submission server? Are you connected via your ISP? Do the messages you are trying to send show up in your "Sent Items" folder? One other note: I see, by your NNTP-Posting IP address that you are a Comcast user. Have you tried changing your output port from port 25 to port 587? If you do try that, you have to set MSOE to "My server requires authentication". -- Norman ~Shine, bright morning light, ~now in the air the spring is coming. ~Sweet, blowing wind, ~singing down the hills and valleys. |

Disable email scanning by the anti-virus application installed on the
computer in question. It provides no additional protection, it's the most likely cause of the problems (not any Windows Updates, I'm afraid), and even Symantec says it's not necessary: QP Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus definitions. /QP http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...02111812533106 If still no joy, your current identity may have been damaged by the AV app. Leaving email scanning disabled, try sending messages from a new identity (File | Identities | Add new identity) as a test. -- ~Robear Dyer (PA Bear) MS MVP-IE, Mail, Security, Windows Desktop Experience - since 2002 AumHa VSOP & Admin http://aumha.net DTS-L http://dts-l.net/ Don Armstrong wrote: Recently , started just less than 2 weeks ago , I started having troubles with my Outlook Express on my main Windows XP Pro system.
