Default fewer messages received than outlook receiving statusbar says

i manage hosting and e-mail for someone and they access their e-mail
accounts using outlook express 6. there are only 2 accounts they have
set up in outlook express.

the problem is that they tell me that when they send/receive mail, the
bar in outlook express says e.g. receiving 1 out of 7 messages... , but
when the mail is all downloaded, there may only actually be say 5
messages there instead of the expected 7.

they are concerned that some mail is getting lost - is this possible?

where are the other messages going?
i use outlook 2003 myself and am unfamiliar with the ins and outs of
the express version.
unfortunately, i do not have access to the person's machine and can't
look at their outlook express for myself!

is it possible that junk mail could be being filtered out or they could
have other filters set up to move mail to other folders etc?
would these messages be included in the send/receive count, while never
appearing in the inbox?

thanks in advance,
janine.

Do they have a message rule to delete spam from the server?

OE counts the messages that were on the server.
A message rule or filter that keeps a message from going to the Inbox will
be the reason for the count being different.
