Default OE Splash Screen Delays Displaying

Running IE6 and OE.

OE is default mail program but is only used periodically on this
machine.

Windows 2000, with all service packs and updates installed to date.

For some reason, OE suddenly delays a full clock minute or more after
launch before it displays the main splash screen that offers various
options.

If I click onto a folder all is well but if I go back to the main
screen the same delay happens again.

Tonight I noticed that when I clicked on that menu option that MSN
Messenger got launched which was not desired.

This has been persisting several days now.

If I set OE to go directly to the INBOX, there is no problem, but any
time I want to go to that main screen, there is this painfully long
delay before it opens.

Anyone know what's up?

Now, my wife is running XP, SP4 and she seems to be getting this same
long-pause before the splash screen comes up, but she can move about
various folders and come back to the splash screen and it comes up
quickly.

We are both using the free AVG anti-virus software that checks
incoming mail but is not scanning outgoing mail.

I am planning on reinstalling OE on my machine but given that my wife
is also experiencing this delay I now wonder if it is something else?

Again this just started happening within th elast week or so, give or
take

-----------

Problem solved (well issue discovered) but I don't like it.

After watching the splash screen try to open MSN Messenger, I tried
running Messenger alone and it prompted me for an update. It would
not run unless I took the update.

I don't use Messenger by the way, but allowed the update to be
installed.

After restarts when I launch Outlook Express and go to the splash
screen it is also launching MSN Messenger - which I DO NOT WANT.

I cannot seem to locate any setting to prevent this from happening.

I also wonder now what would happen if I uninstall MSN Messenger?

This means that every time I launch Outlook Express and go to that
splash screen, Messenger is launched and phones home.

What a breach of privacy.

Yes, thanks.

Interestingly enough, I NOW have a tick box to NOT launch Messenger
when I launch OE.

However on my wife's XP system that tick box does not exist in OE.

I've set her system to go to the INBOX for now.

In Tools | Options | General, there is a box for *Windows* Messenger in
XP/SP2, (There is no XP/SP4), but not MS Messenger.

If it is Windows Messenger, see:
http://kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_messenger.htm

BTW, I think you are confused about the splash screen. The splash screen is
the blue screen with Outlook Express on it that you see when you first open
OE. For a fast connection, it's a split second. The screen you describe
sounds like the one you see if you click on Outlook Express at the top of
the folder tree.

If you want to turn off the splash screen itself..............

Disable Outlook Express Splash Screen:
http://www.insideoe.com/faqs/how.htm#nosplash

But I think that is a moot point with your problem.
