Thanks, Bruce. I'm even worse of than before. Now that I've followed the
backup/clone procedure, the corrupted key(s) is being exported to the new
identities when I create them.
Can oe be thoroughly uninstalled and reinstalled? ie, totally clean out
the registry of all related keys?

I know this is a lot of work, but try a third identity and manually enter
the account settings. If you are successful, you can delete the old
Identities in Regedit as well as File | Identities | Manage Identities.

Any idea of what would happen if I delete "main identity"?

As long as you have another created, and your messages moved, you can delete
the Main Identity.

Success!!!! Here's the sequence that fixes it. Note that my messages were
previously backed up to an off site imap server.
1. Create a new identity with *no* news server subscriptions. Chose the name
wisely, you can't change it later.
2. Delete *all* other identities, including "main identity."
3. Shut down outlook express.
4. Restart the machine.
5. Restart oe
6. *Manually* add mail and newss server accounts.
