Default Help: Express tries to Use Outlook for news messages !

I have both Outlook and Outlook Express on my pc and I use both quite
successfully and often - until recently that is. My problems started when I
began using the newsgroup features of Express.

Whenever I try to reply to a newsgroup message using Express I get a message
which says: 'A program is trying to access e-mail addresses you have stored
in OUTLOOK. Do you want to allow this?'. It doesn't seem to matter how I
response to the yes/no options offered - Outlook loads up anyway and tries to
generate an outward bound email which is exactly what I don't want to happen.
I want to generate my message using Outlook Express NOT Outlook.

What makes this even stranger is that when I click on "reply" to an email
message in Express it quite successfully uses Express to generate that reply.
When I try the same exercise on a newsgroup message OUTLOOK in invoked.

How can I force Express to use Express to reply to newsgroup messages?
NB: I don't particularly want to set Express as my default Email client
(because it isn't)!

You want to use REPLY GROUP to reply to a news post. That will use
Outlook Express to make a post to the newsgroup.

If you use REPLY, that sends an e-mail using your default mail program
(which apparently is Outlook) to the original poster, Nothing is sent
to the newsgroup.

If you use REPLY ALL, that does a combination of REPLY and REPLY GROUP.

Default Express tries to Use Outlook for news messages !

Using Outlook 2003 for Mail and Outlook Express for News

A. Set the defaults to use Outlook Express to access Newsgroups:

1. Control Panel Internet Options Programs Newsgroups Select Outlook
Express and OK your way out;

2. Do not let Outlook or Outlook Express let themselves set to the default
newsreader:

a. Start Outlook Express to access news. When OE prompts you to make it
your default newsreader the next time you launch it, click the "Don't ask me
again" box and then click the "No" button;

b. Close Outlook Express and start Outlook 2003. When it asks whether
you want to set Outlook as your default mail and news handler choose "No".
Leave Outlook open and continue to the next section.

3. Set the Outlook Toolbar:

a. Choose View Toolbars Customize*;

b. Select the Commands tab;

c. From the Categories list select "Go";

d. From the Commands list select "News" and drag & drop it to any place
you want on the Toolbar. The default location is in the "Go" menu.

e. Press Close to return to Outlook.

*Not seeing the News option in Customize? Choose View Toolbars Customize
Toolbars (tab) Select Menu Bar and press Reset Start again from #3

above.

B. Start Outlook Express as Newsreader from a shortcut

1. Copy the following line to your clipboard (CTRL+C):

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /newsonly

2. Right click on an empty area of your Desktop and choose New Shortcut;

3. Paste the contents of your clipboard (CTRL+V) into the "Type the location
of the item" box;

4. Press Next;

5. Type a name for the shortcut (e.g., Newsreader);

6. Press Finish and your shortcut will be created. You can drag & drop this
shortcut to anywhere you want (e.g., Quick Launch toolbar, Shortcuts section
of the Navigation Pane in Outlook 2003).

Thanks to both Michael Santovic for the tip on using "Reply to Group" - a
small detail that seems obvious now that I know it [I haven't had much
experience using newsgroups as you can see].

Also thanks to PA Bear for showing me how to make it very easy to access
news from within Outlook and from the desktop. I followed all the steps and
have a new shortcut on my desktop which works very nicely thanx

You are welcome.

Things that seem obvious in hindsight are not always so obvious up
front.
