If this is not the correct forum for this question please redirect me.

I am trying to get a better understanding of how newsgroup messages are
downloaded and handled. I have several different identities/users on a few
different systems that sometimes subscribe to same groups on the same
computer. In one ID for example all the new messages appear with and
maybe on or two will be the original but most are not. All that is seen are
replies and never the original post. On another ID with the same group the
originals are seen and everything seems normal. There are other
abnormalities like an indication that there are unread posts but all have
been read and none appear new. One thread I started can be seen on a group
but when the ID is changed that post does not show on the same group. I have
tried unsubscribing and resubscribing but this condition does not change. I
have unchecked Synchronize to see if this had any effect but nothing seems
to clear this up. I tried reset and downloading again but still no joy. I
tried adding another account with duplicate settings and all the new posts
start with once again on the new account. I tried compacting and
everything I can find but I am lost as to how to fix this problem.

I will be very thankful if anyone has any idea of what can be done.

TIA

Jake

Try this in all identities/User Profiles:

Tools Options Read Get XXX headers at a time

You may set this option as high as 1,000. Right-click on the newsgroup in
Folders pane Synchronization Settings select New Messages Only. Now
every time you open the newsgroup (or hit F5), you will download the
next-newest set of headers/messages.

When you feel you've downloaded enough headers/messages, again right-click
on the newsgroup in Folders pane and select Catch Up Now. This will Mark as
Read all messages on the server, including ones you've not yet downloaded.
Now return to "Get XXX headers at a time" and uncheck the option completely;
then compact the folder.

From now on, OE will only download headers/messages posted to the server
since you last checked (polled) for messages.

You should probably visit this page, too:
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm#cleannews (lotsa good stuff
there).

In WinXP only, Users can share a common OE message store and Address Book;
see http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_o..._share_address

Hmm, good catch there; wouldn't have thought of that in a million years I
don't think! Hope it helped the OP.

That could be just a reflection of how old the opening posts are.
E.g. some newsgroups just have discussions under a few Subjects.
In addition it could be a reflection of how frequently the server that
you are connected to flushes its cache.

On another ID with the same group the originals are seen
and everything seems normal.

Pick a better server; get better retention policies... ; )

There are other abnormalities like an indication that there are unread posts

That's a common symptom of a news server sending an illogical "estimate"
of how many messages there are to download (e.g. more than are possible
in the range it shows) and OE proving that it can do arithmetic...

One thread I started can be seen on a group but when the ID is changed
that post does not show on the same group.

Does different ID mean different server too? Then, again, it could just be
a reflection of the different quality of message retention between two servers.

Use OE's troubleshooting log for News to check that OE is getting all
that each news server is offering. If you like you can either use a different
news reader or telnet 119 to confirm those observations.

Good luck

Thank you for the help. I have learned much in the past few days of working
out this condition. I have decided it must be partly due to a server and am
trying different NG services.

The different ID in this case is with the same server. This is what is
getting confusing. I can still go to the same group today and see one post
that does not show in an other ID. Also many of the posts within a thread do
not appear which I have verified by going to Google. There they all show
fine and I can tell which ones I miss. This is all one on computer now so I
have been wondering if there is a way to wipe everything clean and start
again. But I am a bit timid about this and don't want to lose everything
related to OE which has happened before.

tried unsubscribing and resubscribing but this condition does not

I can see I still need to learn more as what you describe is not familiar.
I know nothing about 'Telnet procedures.

Thank you very much.

If you are getting two different views of the same server in different accounts
it must mean that something is different about the account, e.g. different
view or different rules, etc. Actually there are still other possibilities which
could be hypothesised involving the server side but they would be extremely
unlikely and could only be discounted by doing a full packet trace of the
NNTP exchanges as each account downloads its headers. Unfortunately
OE's troubleshooting log only shows us OE requesting the headers.
The only indication that we can get from it that it actually got some is if we also
request all message bodies to be downloaded as well. So the combination
of not being able to see the actual headers downloaded and the possibility
of rules deleting messages based on header information could explain
your symptom as described so far. Note that accidental additions to the
Blocked Senders list is the most common example and unfortunately
extremely easy to do (with insufficient warning IMO). E.g. hitting Alt-M,S
when I am aiming for Alt-M,a is something that has caused me annoyance
more than once. ; ] Fortunately I have never had the misfortune to have an
Enter primed to fall after it but that is another related possibility which could
actually delete some of the messages that you already had downloaded...
eg

I will not be concerned with one post that gives me a problem for now. I am
still trying to decide on a good news server that works better than the ones
I have tried so far. I will be trying Easy News as it seems to get some good

and have never used the block senders list so I don't think I have
inadvertently done anything but that would still be a possibility.

Thanks again for the help.

Sometimes I enjoy the privacy of non-Comcrap subscribers. Being able to use proxy servers to maintain anonymous posting. I have one particular stalker that enjoys following me around and posting crap forging my Nym. I also like to shield my wife from attacks when freak boy tracks my IP. Usenet bullies that don't leave the house all day are shut-ins for a reason. Comcrap apparently does not allow privacy in that respect.

The revelation of your posting IP address is a matter of server
policy. The Giganews server decides whether, or not, to include your
posting IP address. I am using 'msnews.microsoft.com' to post this;
the policy is to include my posting IP address in my headers. I
*could* use 'news.sf.sbcglobal.net' to post this; their policy, also,
is to include my posting IP address in headers. Aside from the
ethically challenged use of open proxies, I believe one service which
does not include the posting IP address of its subscribers is
Supernews.

Comcast can't control the exposure of your IP address, whether in
news, or email headers. The server at the far end of your connection
*needs* to know it in order to return any information that you have
requested. If you connect directly to any server I run, I will see
your IP address.

I can post with this one and as far as I can tell I am not exposing my addy
and can not be traced without outside help. So far so good.
