Here is my problem, and I hope some one out there can help me on what to do.
I went away for the weekend and left my PC on, like always. Well, I wasn't able to get to my email until late Sunday. It had loaded up with a little over 2,200 emails and it wasn't accepting anymore. No problem, I was just starting to delete some of them, and then make room for the new ones. Only problem is I forgot to turn off my internet connection, and it started to download more. When I went to delete a big block of emails, it was bringing new ones in at the same time, and then things just froze. Well, I was able to copy my Inbox folder from my Outlook Express folder, and I copied it to my work computer, that has no internet access. I then copied the empty email box to my main computer, thus allowing me to still receive new emails. When I tried to just copy the folder into the work PC'c Outlook Express email folder, and then open it up, nothing showed up. When I then copied over this file with the empty folder gain, I then tried to import the messages from a store directory, and this told me that it was an invalid folder, and that nothing was inside. Does anyone out there know how I can access this file and somehow reduce it, without compromising the integrity of the folder, and thus allowing me to open it up again in Outlook Express. I was hoping I could maybe open it using Notepad or WordPad, remove a bunch of text from different messages, close the file, and then import what is left into OE6, and have good messages left. Is this possible, or is there another program that will allow me to do this. If not, is there some other way that I am not thinking of, or doing, to somehow import these messages into either OE6 or Outlook even. Thanks for ay help from anyone in advance. All help or suggestions are greatly appreciated. |

Did you copy the Inbox.dbx file from one machine to another? Copying the
folder won't work. If you have the dbx file on any machine, drag it to the Desktop and rename it to anything you want as long as another folder with the same name does not exist. Open OE and create a folder with the *exact* same name as the one on the Desktop. Open the new folder and then close OE. Go to Windows Explorer and locate the Message Store folder for your OE identity, but don't open it. Click on the Desktop and drag the file from the Desktop in the right hand pane to the OE store folder in the left pane. Prompt - "Do you want to overwrite......."? Click Yes. -- Bruce Hagen MS-MVP Outlook Express ~IB-CA~ "Rolling Rock 33" wrote in message news:GvPEh.2175$QI4.1288@trnddc01... As Bruce indicates, try the method for importing an individual dbx file:
see www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx#imp1 Use a different name than inbox.dbx steve "Rolling Rock 33" wrote in message news:GvPEh.2175$QI4.1288@trnddc01... Well, I did everything that you guys said, and still no luck. I tried your
instructions on 2 different machines, and still nothing. Does it make a difference that the size of the email box/folder is 2GB? I'm not sure if it does or not. It definitely registers as that size though, roughly that size. When I go to copy it from folder to folder, it takes around 10 minutes to copy, but when I cut/paste it from the desktop to the OE6 folder, it goes instantly. When I restart OE6, it sees the folder that I created, but it never has any files in it. Only my Inbox, which is receiving new mail. Any other ideas what might be wrong? Thanks for the help too, by the way. |

General precautions for Outlook Express:
Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They will eventually become corrupt. Create your own user defined folders for storing mail and move your mail to them. Empty Deleted Items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 100MB, and Default folders as empty as is feasible. After you are done, follow up by compacting your folders manually while working *offline* and do it often. Click on Outlook Express at the top of the folder tree so no folders are open. Then: File | Work Offline (or double click Working Online in the Status Bar). File | Folder | Compact all folders. Don't touch anything until the compacting is completed. Turn off e-mail scanning in your anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that eats up CPUs and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs and account setting changes. Your up-to-date A/V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more, see: http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3 In Tools | Options | Maintenance: Uncheck Compact messages in background and leave it unchecked. {N/A if running XP/SP2}. And backup often. That all sounds good, and i will start doing these things now. But, the big
question is, am I screwed right now? Is everything I had in that email folder basically gone? |

The messages that you saved to your work computer. Can you access them
there? If you can, then copy them to CD, and copy that CD to the machine you want them on and follow the instructions on importing a single folder. You can also try to retrieve the messages from the original machine with this tool.
