Here is an update on what I have done... I turned off all the McAfee
Viruscan, created a new identity using new data. My attempt to set up newsgroups -the email seemed to be fine - timed out 3 times and then got this message," The TCP/IP connection was unexpectedly terminated by the server." The only thing that may be helpful from the details was the Code: 800ccc0f Hopefully attached below is the log of the attempt to connect: Microsoft Internet Messaging API 6.00.2900.3028 (xpsp_sp2_gdr.061107-0012) NNTP Log started at 01/13/2007 17:42:35 NNTP: 17:42:35 [db] Connecting to 'msnews.microsoft.com' on port 119. You are getting the same problem with the Microsoft news server. So it's not a issue with your ISP news servers. And the type of error doesn't look like a firewall issue You are connecting successfully and getting some communications before things hang. You said that you tried creating a new identity and that didn't work. Did you try setting up and using the news account before (or without) importing the data from the old identity. As long as you didn't do the import, if the problem were any data corruption in the old identity, that wouldn't occur in the new identity. If you did import from the old identity before trying the news account, that could have transferred corrupted data. In that case, create another new identity, then try the news server before doing any import. Beyond that, there is the possibility of some corruption in the OE program files. But that's rare. To eliminate that as a possibility, see: How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=318378 The only other thing I can think of is that some other program is messing with the communications between OE and the news servers. Are you running any Internet privacy software? Norton has a product, and there are others on the market that scan the communication and mask selective data. Or if you have an anti-virus program set to scan newsgroups, that could potentially cause a problem. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "AHAllen" wrote in message ... E.g. enter HELP (or QUIT) Earlier Michael suggested you check your firewall settings and I agree the symptoms could be due to a firewall configuration error. E.g. notice that all we know is that you can't *send* commands but the server's messages can be *received*. So check for an outbound block on port 119. Alternatively, temporarily get rid of your software firewall and use the Windows firewall instead. Otherwise I still think you should escalate this to your ISP. It's obviously not an out and out block of port 119 because you get the prompt from the server but something is clearly preventing outbound traffic and they should be able to help you given such symptoms. Thank you for your input, Robert. One thing I need to admit (if you haven't
already realized) is that I know enough to follow instructions and that's about it... so I really need instructions in order to be able to check the telnet as you suggest. I have never used my McAfee firewall and I turned off the Windows one when I started having this problem. Also, in answer to Michael, I have not installed any type of newsgroup proxy. The most aggravating thing to me is that I have been using the newsgroups on this computer for the last 2 years (Dell Dimension 4600) with no problem and then I suddenly got the timeout signals. Tonight I will try some of Michael's suggestions regarding resetting Winsock settings and looking for spyware, etc. Thanks so much to you both ! That it worked for a while after the Winsock fix, then got hung up again
would suggest that you have some sort malware that hosed the Winsock connection, and the program is still on your PC and hosed things up again. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "AHAllen" wrote in message ... Alright, gentlemen, here is the good news, bad news. Tonight I have run the Winsock XP Fix Tool. I was excited as I got communication when I asked for the list of newgroups to be downloaded from my Time Warner (Roadrunner) newsreader and the huge list downloaded and I subscribed to 2 of my former groups (Rec.scuba & rec.scuba.locations). Then it would not download messages and did the time-out thing. So it's like I'm half-way there... We won't worry about that since it was a while ago. In the other log entries of the past few days, OE is making a connection to the 'news-server.nc.rr.com' and sending the "MODE READER" command. At this point, OE is expecting some response from the news server and not getting it. So the problem doesn't seem to be a firewall. You are making a connection. It's as if the MODE command is getting lost or ignored by the news server or the response is getting lost. Even if the news server doesn't support the MODE command, it should give an error response. ... Thank you for your input, Robert. One thing I need to admit (if you haven't already realized) is that I know enough to follow instructions and that's about it... so I really need instructions in order to be able to check the telnet as you suggest. One thing I need to admit (if you haven't already realized) is that I know enough to follow instructions and that's about it... so I really need instructions in order to be able to check the telnet as you suggest. I thought you had already done this? Open a cmd window and enter: telnet msnews.microsoft.com 119 That will clear the screen. Wait for a prompt ...Posting Allowed Then enter one of the commands I suggested. E.g. QUIT to terminate HELP to see a list of other commands. If you do the HELP and get something back you would notice the mode reader as being one of the commands which the msnews server allows. However, my guess is that something is blocking outbound transmission to that port and that explains your symptom. Whether it is caused by a misconfigured firewall or malware is immaterial. The effect would be the same. Notice that the first prompt occurs without any command being transmitted. Oops/ Unfortunately, this hypothesis can not account for the LIST command one of your traces showed working. Do we know how often that command is issued and whether it completes? In case that has something to do with the symptom another thing you should try is _unchecking_ Notify me if there are any new newsgroups (in Options, General tab; keystrokes: Alt-T,O,N) and restart OE. BTW I have never noticed the LIST command showing in the troubleshooting log before. Usually in order to see if that is happening I have to resort to a packet tracer such as netcap. Such a trace could be useful in your case too to really clarify what is going on. However, by probing the interface with telnet and by disabling an automatic LIST command from OE there may be enough information to infer the same facts. Good luck Robert --- |

Gentlemen: I have some great (but puzzling) news to report. Yesterday, to try
to run another log on trying to connect, the connection was made and newsgroups downloaded! Seems to have started working fine. I waited to try again today and again, everything seems to be back to normal. I will, of course save all of your suggestions - I printed most of them - in case the problem mysteriously comes back. Then WAIT. It's possible that the 1 minute timeout you have is not enough for some reason. Is there a proxy server involved? Even though you are going to msnews if a proxy server was involved it would be doing the same thing in each case regardless of the final destination server. Pass these additional symptoms on to your ISP. Escalate if necessary. I think you have proven that OE is not a factor in your primary symptom, which you have now refined to be: "no response (or perhaps extremely delayed response) to NNTP MODE command".
