Help! I KNOW I'm supposed to copy my Outlook Express attachments into
my own files before working on them, but forgot. I worked on a Word document directly as an attachment, saving it as I went along, and of course, when I opened it up today, all my editing was gone. Where did that work go? |

I found out the hard way that unless you use "save as" that OE defaults to
saving to a temporary file. You could go into all the temp files and look for it, but if you haven't cleaned them out recently, there may be a lot of them. Good luck. Maybe one of the MVPs has an easier way. Pamela wrote in message ups.com... Help! I KNOW I'm supposed to copy my Outlook Express attachments into my own files before working on them, but forgot. When you open an attachment, it is stored as a file in a temporary
location. Any editing and saving you do affects that temporary copy. When you close the message to which contains the attachment, the temporary copy is deleted. However, if the temporary copy is still open in Word when the message is closed, the Word document may not be deleted. IN that case you may be able to fins it by searching the Temporary Internet Files folder. Assuming that you're using Windows XP or 2000, you can do that this way: In order for this to work, your system msut be set to display hidden files and folders and NOT to hide protected operating system files. Open Windows Explorer. Type "%userprofile%\Local Settings" in the address bar and press Enter. In the right-hand pane, right click on the Temporary Internet Files folder. Click Search, or whaetever it's called in XP, on the context menu. Type the file name into the box and click the Search Now button. If the file still exists, the search should find it. Otherwise it has been deleted and you're out of luck unless you happen to have a deleted-file recovery program handy. wrote: Help! It WAS in the Internet Explorer Temporary Internet Files (TIF).
Chances are it's gone now. If you last saved the file before you closed the message in OE, then OE will attempt to delete it. Even if it's still there, it won't show up if you look at the TIF via IE Internet Options or Windows Explorer. If it's still there, you can get to it if you open a Command Prompt window. But it its awkward since you are dealing with hidden folders and very long and cryptic folder names. If you are familiar with "DOS" commands, and get to a command prompt above the TIF, the command DIR /A /S *.DOC should show the file it it's there. If so you can CD commands to maneuver to it and then use the COPY command to copy it to a normal folder. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm wrote in message ups.com... I don't think its "findable" in the TIF. OE uses a different file name for
many of its pieces that it opens from the TIF and it would be quite difficult to locate the file, and if OE closed, then it deleted it anyway probably. steve "Michael Santovec" wrote in message ... I did a test of that before posting and it worked. I opened an Excel
file from an OE message modified it and saved it. Via the command prompts I was able to find the file in the TIF (it had the same name as the original attachment). I was then able to use the COPY command to copy it to a normal folder. I was then able to open the copied file and it had the changes that I made. This was on Windows XP SP2. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Steve Cochran" wrote in message ... I don't think its "findable" in the TIF. Okay. Thanks for that. When it opens embedded files, it does not use the
original filename, so I figured it was the same for attachments. Did OE delete it when it closed? steve "Michael Santovec" wrote in message ... I did a test of that before posting and it worked. It's still there after several OE closings and Windows reboots. In fact
I found another attachment that's been in the TIF for several weeks. -- Mike - http://pages.prodigy.net/michael_santovec/techhelp.htm "Steve Cochran" wrote in message ... Okay. Thanks for that.
