Default MS Outlook opens when it shouldn't

In our postage/label generating program, I can send an email, through the
program, to the customer which gives his tracking number, etc. On the first
email of the day, Outlook Express (default) comes up, but from the 2nd on, MS
Outlook comes up. In order to keep using OE, I have to shut down and reopen
the program. Very annoying, especially on a busy day.
I've contacted support for the company, and they don't know what the heck is
going on. Just thought I would try here.

Thanks for any help.
