Default Error when accepting invitation

I have Outlook 2000. Whenever I try to accept an invitation someone sends
me, it posts it to my calendar, but then I get a "Microsoft has encountered
an error and needs to close" message and closes Outlook before the sender
receives my acceptance.

I have tried using the "detect and repair" function, but that didn't seem to
help. Can this be fixed, or do I have to talk our IT dept. into upgrading to
a newer version?
