Default Overwrite instead of repeat calendar items when importing iCalenda

Is there a string that can be added to .ics files using Notepad to specify
that the .ics file should overwrite an existing matching item rather than
creating a duplicate item? I am working with Outlook 2003, and have created
a multiple event item by saving several events as .ics files and then merging
them through copying and pasting in Notepad. I had though the purpose of the
UID was so that it would overwrite existing events with the same UID, but
this is not happening. If this cannot be done, is there a macro that can be
created to remove duplicates, perhaps by using the UID to recognize the
duplicates?
