Knowing if a message has been read

Without using the read receipt, is there any other method for checking to see
if a message has been read?

Yes. Send an HTML mail with embedded images and individualized access
URL to those images. Track access to those images on your web server.

Note that by default modern e-mail clients (Outlook, Gmail etc) no
longer display embedded images in HTML e-mail for precisely this reason.
The user has to explicitly request such an action.

I am sure that Playboy's HTML newsletter containing images has a very
high open ratio.
