Am I right in thinking, that after nearly 5 years, Microsoft still haven't
released a fix for the problem whereby Outlook Express 6 doesn't remember
the password properly for mail or news accounts?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290684/en-us. Every time I do an install
(whichever XP Pro CD I use), I have to waste time editing the registry as
detailed in the fix.

Tonight, I've just rebuilt my laptop again. I then applied every available
fix via Windows Update before configuring mail and news and hitting the
problem again.

Why haven't MS issued a fix for this that can be applied via Windows Update
just after installing XP? Or am I missing something here?
