Yes that box is checked, any other ideas?

Many thanks

In Outlook Express menu, under Tools/Options/Read, do you have a check in
the box to "automatically download messages when viewing in the Preview
Pane?" If not, try it and see if your problem is fixed.

Thanks Jim,

The status bar is displayed at the bottom of the screen but what is
missing is the downloading status bar that used to appear within the
status bar when files began to download.
I found this useful when downloading a string of large binary files. You
could see which file was currently downloading and how far it had
progressed.
The progress bar I'm referring to still appears if I open a new
newsgroup, while the headers are being downloaded but not when individual
files are being downloaded.
Tia.

Is the status bar displayed? With a high speed connection, the polling
for messages can be quite quick and you might miss it. If the status
bar is missing, then someone has changed your settings under View/Layout
and you can fix it by putting a check in there in the box for Status Bar
and click Apply.

I'm running OE6 with SP2 and have noticed that the downloading progress
bar
that used to run along the bottom of the screen has disappeared.
I always use Windows updates and I am wondering if one of these updates
has
caused the dowloading progress status bar to disappear.
Any help appreciated, tia.
