Your problem is a bit unusual and have not seen this before. There are many
things you can try.
Look first at *anything* that touches your e-mail. A/V programs, anti-spam
programs, etc.
What is your OS? If this started after 4/11/06, see if you have the update
KB911567 installed. If you do, see Point 14 at this link. It can effect
other things than what is mentioned there.

Some other things to try:
You may have a damaged identity. File | Identity | Add New Identity. Create
a new one and test it. If all is well, you can import your messages from the
old identity and delete it.

Also, in Tools | Accounts, remove the account and after a reboot, add the
account back.
