Default Why OE does not use my specified fonts?

As I have said repeatedly, my problem is with Reply Group, not reading and
not composing a new message.

I now suspect that the problem has to do with the charset of the original
message.

I expected that to be trumped by setting "Read all messages in plain text"
and by setting Courier New for both Proportional and Fixed-width fonts under
Read Fonts.

But I have no problem when I reply to your message, which does not specify
charset. And I have no problem when I form a reply to some of my posted
messages. Some have no charset specification; some have
charset="Windows-1252"; some have charset="iso-8859-1".

The messages that I do have a problem replying to -- that is, the font is
non-proportional in the Reply Group composition window -- have
charset="Utf-8".

That seems to be a sufficient condition. But I cannot say with impunity
that that is a necessary condition; that is, if only charset="Utf-8"
presents a problem. I only did a quick spot-check.

All of the message that I refer to here have either no content-type
specification or content-type "text/plain".

First try creating a new identity in OE and see if the
problem occurs there.

Thanks for the suggestion and pointer. I'll give it whirl.

Although I use Windows Live Mail as my primary mail and news program, I
tested your scenario with my Outlook Express (XP SP3),

If you've set your OE to Real All Messages in Plain text, yet when you
read a message you don't see it in the Proportional Font specified under
Read Fonts, then you may have some corruption in OE.

First try creating a new identity in OE and see if the problem occurs
there.

Thanks for that.

Are you seeing the original message that you are replying
to in Courier New?

No, not even after I implemented your suggestion above in addition to all
the other settings that I documented in my original posting. I exited
and restarted OE.

And what you are trying to do works in my Outlook Express.

You and I are not using the same software or revision for posting. What
are you using?

When you post, the relevant headers a

X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V14.0.8064.206

When I post, those headers a

Since you are using Plain Text for newsgroups, which is the generally
preferred format, ANY font that you use will only be seen by you while
composing. It will not be sent with the message and any viewers will
see whatever font their system is set to use.

Are you seeing the original message that you are replying to in Courier
New?

If not, make sure that you've set Tools, Options, Read, Read All Message
in plain text.

As for what you trying to do, the critical part is setting the
Proportional Font. The compose settings only apply to HTML format
message.

And what you are trying to do works in my Outlook Express.

When I do Reply Group, OE seems to ignore my font selection.

How can I coerce OE to use my font selection?
My intent is to always use a non-proportional font, specifically
Courier New.

That works fine when I compose a new message.

But when I do Reply Group, I get a proportional font, presumably Arial.

This is true whether or not I select the Send option "Include message
in reply".

I have the following settings:

1. Read Fonts Fonts:

Western European
Proportion font: Courier New
Fixed-width font: Courier New
Font size: Medium
Encoding: Western European (Windows)
Default encoding: Western European
Pressed Set as Default

2. Send:

Uncheck "Reply to messags using the format in which they were
sent"

3. Send Mail Sending Format
Send News Sendind Format:

Select Plain Text
Setting:
MIME with Encode: None
(Also tried Uuencode)

4. Compose:

Mail: 10pt Courier New
News: 10pt Courier New

I am using MS Win XP Pro 2002 SP3 with OE6 revision 6.00.2900.5512
(xpsp 080413-2105) with all patches through the end of March.
