Default default email client is not properly installed

Hi PA Bear & Bruce,

Yes I have that reg key but no, I don't have a DWORD named UseOutlook .

I just tried the mailto branch registry changes listed previously (the
"EditFlags" string and the "FriendlyTypeName" string), to no avail.

Boy, this is odd. I have tried so many different ways to register OE as my
default email client, and so many remedies mentioned in Google searches for
the error message, and this thing is being quite stubborn. Since the IE
error message says, "Could not perform this operation because the default
email client is not properly installed", could that point to corruption in
OE? As I mentioned, OE is working great for me in all other aspects. I just
recently migrated to IE7 from IE6, but I think I was still able to open email
links in IE7 for a little while after upgrading before this problem kicked in.

Hope someone can come up with another idea. - Thank you!

• Do you have this Registry key?...

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WAB\WAB4

• If not, STOP; If so, is there a DWORD named UseOutlook (NB: no space) and
is its value set to 1 (one)?

• If not, STOP; If so, Address Book is configured to share contacts with
Outlook, even if you don't use it (can happen with the install of Office).
Change the value to 0 (zero), close REGEDIT & reboot: Address Book should be
available to you and all should be well. (If that DWORD is not present,
don't create it, and don't alter any other DWORD values.)

Note that any changes (additions, deletions, edits) made while sharing was
enabled will not be available (displayed) in Address Book when sharing is
disabled.

Are you running WinXP SP2 or WinXP SP3? Did you just install IE7?

Is MS Office and/or MS Outlook also installed?

When I click on an email hyperlink in a browser window (IE7), I get a
Windows Internet Explorer error message that says: "Could not perform

I have two machines with nearly identical software and settings on each
one.
This problem just cropped up on only one machine. The other is fine...
I
can click on an email hyperlink in IE7 and my email client, Outlook
Express,
pops up.

I have been through all of the OE settings on each machine. They are
identical. I have followed EVERY step on this page (
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=306098 ) to make OE my default client
(even though it always has been and has been working fine up until
today,
when I noticed this inability to send mail from a link in a web page).
I
have tried all three methods of registering OE as default shown on that
page
and I also checked the registry to see if I needed to add a data string
to
the default mail client key (instructions at the bottom of that page).
The
value was already there.

I have also opened Folder Options|File Types in Windows Explorer and
checked
the values for URL:MailTo Protocol. The value reads as it should...
application: "C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE" /mailurl:%1
And the path to msimn.exe is correct.

Otherwise, OE is functioning perfectly for me. I can also use the Send
To
feature with no problem.

Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?
