That's a mistake. Importing loses data.

The probelm I am having is when I am typing an email and
click to to choose an address I see all my contact folders that I set
up as different groups and when I click on my "frends" group folder
it shows all the names but the email address does not show up next to
it.

Importing often leaves mail addresses unresolved, causing them to not appear
in the address book interface.

If I export the fiel to a csv I can see all the email addresses
in there proper columns and they all show a display as entry. I am
very confused with why the email address is not populating in the
address book.

Delete the contacts you imported. Open the original PST with
FileOpenOutlook Data File. Open the COntacts folder int hat PST, select
all the contacts with Ctrl-A, then drag the selection to your default
Contacts folder.
