Can't created groups or use addresses in contact list ...
Sorry for the delay, that solution didn't work but I bit the bullet and
opened the properties of each (only had 22) and cut and pasted the email
addr. back in and all appears well. I can make D-Lists and have now started
adding additional names.
Thanks for your help.

So did you reconfigure your Outlook Address Book as I'd suggested?
Remove it from your profile. Restart Outlook. Add it back and make sure the
Contacts Folder that has the valid email addresses is the one you are
displaying in your Outlook Address Book.

AS I tried to say, I used the export feature within OUtlook to export
contacts into a pst file from an older version of Outlook onto a floppy
and
used the Import feature to transfer the contacts onto a newer version of
Outlook on another PC. AS per Article ID : 286170
The contacts are there. when I look at their properties, they have an
underline under the email address as if it's a valid link but the link
doesn't work, They can be copied/pasted into the To field of a new
message.
However, when trying to type in the name, Outlook won't resolve the
address
and closes the new message window.
In other words, the contacts appear within the addressbook when looking at
it but when you dbl click to choose the name, it only shows a semi-colon.
Now, I can't say this any better. A new mssage isn't using the addressbook
to resolve email addresses.

You're posting very incomplete and inconsistent information.
Time for you to state accurately how you transferred your data. State
accurately what works now and what doesn't.
Did you backup your data before you tried this transfer?

No I can't create a D-List from current addressess.
Yes, the addresses are underlined when I open one of the contacts.
Outlook doesn't seem to recognize them. If I cut and paste into another
email (ie. yahoo) they work fine ....

Also, as far as your distribution lists are concerned, they were
definitely
lost. They never survive export and import.

I have a smiliar problem to Gary, I transferred contacts from an old
computer
with an older version of Outlook into Outlook XP using the export
and
import
commands.
I see the contacts but when I go to enter an address an the To
field,
it
closes the window or is blank. I can manually type an addr. and send
an
email
I just can't use any of the email addressses from my contact list.
Nor can I create a distribution list. When I go to add a name all I
get
is
a
semi colon.
Thanks, I'll also try the fix you gave gary....
