Default Email to a category

1. In an earlier thread posted here, a client asked how to send an email to a
category. Milly Staples advised:

"Display your contacts by category view, drag the category to the inbox."

When I select my "Contacts" folder (viewed by category) in the Navigation
Pane, I can no longer see my inbox and so don't know how to drag a category
to the inbox. There must be a way to display the inbox folder AND the
categories at the same time, but I can't figure out how. Ideas?

2. I have noticed in several other discussion threads that the use of
categories can have advantages over distribution lists. Is there some place
one can read about the advantages?
