In XP:
START | CONTROL PANEL | INTERNET OPTIONS
In 2000:
START | SETTINGS | CONTROL PANEL | INTERNET OPTIONS
Go to the ADVANCED TAB
Just abover UNDERLINE LINKS it says SHOW INTERNET EXPLORER ON THE
DESKTOP
Uncheck it, click APPLY then check it again, click APPLY then click OK
The Desktop should refresh & re-create the IE icon

Well obviously, that's not correct. And it's easier just
to create a new one. You can figure out what's wrong
with it later.
1). Right click an empty space somewhere on the
desktop
2). Click new
3). Click shortcut
4). Click browse
5). Expand my computer
6). Expand the C drive
7). Expand program files
8). Expand the internet explorer directory
9). Click the iexplore.exe program once
10). Click OK
11). Click next
12). Clear the prefilled shortcut name
13). Enter the new name for the shortcut. Something like
"Internet Explorer"
14). Click finish
15). You can now right click the icon and drag it to the
desktop location desired
16). Double click the icon to launch IE
Disclaimer:
Many assumptions were made he
1). The C drive is your OS
2). iexplore.exe resides where described, and the direct-
ory structure is similar as described. To aid with the
iexplore.exe location, use search
I guess it's possible that your current IE icon is merely
building another icon for the IE launch. But, I can't see
it, and much easier to just create a new one.
Additionally, there's usually a launch for IE behind the
START button in the lower left corner. Just another
option
