Thanks, Frank. FWIW, I re-compacted this morning, and the .bak files are in
my recycle bin (like they're 'sposed to be). I apparently emptied the
recycle bin (though I really didn't think I did)...

Thanks Robear. Is that KB article telling me that the copying I saw going on
was corrupt files being backed up, or just files being backed up in case
they are corrupt? Should I be restoring those...
