EMail Addresses in my Contacts aren't found when addressing messag

I have a couple thousand contacts in my contacts folder with email address.
When I am sending a email message outlook does not find any of these
addresses when I start typing into the TO: line. Why? How do I fix this?

Right-Click on the Contacts in your secret version of Outlook, choose
Properties and click on the Outlook Address book tab. Is the box checked
"Show this folder as an email address book"?

Because what appears when you start typing in the address field doesn't have
anything to do with your contacts. It's just a list of the addresses to which
you've sent messages in the past, whether or not you used your contacts when
sending the message.

Just to add to what Brian said, the list will repopulate as you send more
messages.
