Okay Karl, am trying to do all exactly as you indicate.

Copied the PST file to the external hard drive. Went to work, opened it via
Outlook Data File. Includes it as a personal file folder. Contact folder
appears. Contains the contacts we are looking for but without the custom
fields.

Selected the contact folder properties, assigned correct form to use. The
custom form was published prior to any copying of file. When contact is
opened only generic outlook contact form info appears. If adding a new
contact however correct form appears.

So, I am still at square one! Thanks Sally

publishing forms, going to "account settings" etc etc etc and I didn't
notice one answer to the 3 questions related to step #2. As for finding

original PST file that contains your contacts - all you need to do is
right
click on the root of the PST file from within Outlook -- Properties --
Advanced and look to see where the PST file is located (not to mention
making sure that you are copying the right one). There can be any number
of
PST files on your system so anybody's guess as to what you may be copying
from "search engine" results.

hard drives (work and office) - simply copy PST file from external
drive
(this presumes you're using the same PST file name on both systems
and
that
the custom form has been published to the folder to ensure that
everything
remains constant.

One of two things could be the possibility:

#1 - The custom form that was published used a different name (or to put it
another - was not published using the exact same form name as used when
the contacts were published - it only takes one character in the custom form
name to be different)
#2 - The contacts were not created using any custom form

Either case, Diane's suggestion for DocMessageClass will solve your problem.
We also have a similar program (ContactGenie -Message Class Modifier -
http://www.contactgenie.com/cgtmcm.htm). Among other things, one thing that
CG-MCM will show you is exactly what "message classes" were used to create
contacts (and the number of contacts that any given message class applies
to) in any given folder and allow you to change either a specific message
class or any number if multiple msg class names are found in the folder.
Whichever program you use, either will resolve your problem.

to import/export PST files for any scenario). Also, as an aside,
you
can't
import/export any custom fields using the Outlook import/export
wizard.
You'd need a 3rd party product (like one of the ones we provide)
but
in
this
case, simply not necessary, not recommended and would strongly
advise
staying away from anything "import/export" in this case. This of
course
assumes that contacts at work are NOT also being updated at the
same
time
you are updating contacts at home. If that's the case, then the
following
items would work:

Before continuing with alternatives, just a sidenote - there is
nothing
to
prevent you from maintaining your PST file on an external drive
and
using
that same PST file on both systems - just as long as everything
is
configured correctly (i.e. points to the correct PST file). That
said......

#2 - If you want to maintain your primary PST file on the hard
drive
at
work
and update it at home "as a for instance" - all you need to do
is
the
following:
a) copy PST file from office to external drive
b) at home, open the PST file on the external drive
in
Outlook
c) update as necessary
d) when back at work, copy PST file back to original
location
(with Outlook closed)
e) open Outlook and you should be good to go

#3 - If for some reason, you want to maintain a copy of this
data
on
both
hard drives (work and office) - simply copy PST file from
external
drive
(this presumes you're using the same PST file name on both
systems
and
that
the custom form has been published to the folder to ensure that
everything
remains constant.
