OL 2007

Some how in importing to my contacts from Excel I have acquired some data in
the Home Address field that I can not delete. Every record has this same
data in it. I have exported my contacts back to Excel, cleared the HMStreet1
and HMStreet2, deleted every contact in that folder and re imported the
information…..it’s still there.
Any one know any way to fix my problem?

One of the first steps in "fixing" a problem is identifying the source
(cause) and not strictly focusing on the "symptom" (result). Impossible to
provide any kind of definitive answer since no tangible info was provided
(i.e. what exactly is the "data" that shouldn't be there, how exactly was
the imported, how were the fields mapped exactly etc etc). Rather than deal
in speculation and endless hypotheticals - here's a very simple test you can
do:

#1 - Create a new Excel worksheet with the same field names
#2 - Populate one row leaving the HMStreet1 & 2 fields alone (leave blank)
#3 - Create a named range - save the file
#4 - In Outlook - create a new PST file with a new contact folder (just to
keep this absolutely as simple and clean as possible)
#5 - Import file from step #3 into contact folder from step #4 following
identical steps (and field mapping) as originally done

a) If problem shows itself - determine what the extraneous characters are
and provide complete info so someone may have a better picture of things
(would also suggest trying the same process on another machine if possible
to see if identical results occur)

b) If problem doesn't show itself at this point, import original Excel
worksheet into contact folder from step #4
1) if problem shows itself after importing original Excel file at
this point - issue is strictly with your Excel worksheet/data (no ifs, ands
or buts)
2) if problem doesn't show itself - potential issue is with either
your original contact folder or PST file in general - run ScanPST on
original PST to see if there are any issues that need to get fixed. Repeat
step b.

Background trivia info regarding Outlook addresses and final question:

#1 - The complete (Home/Business/Other) Address is comprised of multiple
fields that are maintained separately by Outlook. However........
#2 - The individual fields Home Street, Home Street 2, Home Street 3 (or
equivalent for Business/Other) are logical fields used only in the Outlook
import/export field map in the Outlook UI and do not physically exist
separately nor are these fields maintained separately by Outlook. When
mapping to these individual fields for importing purposes, Outlook
dynamically aggregates the data in a single Street address field which is
what actually also gets exported which brings up the final question:

You mentioned that you exported your data and cleared HMStreet1 and
HMStreet2 (assuming you are referring to data after exporting from Outlook).
Outlook doesn't export separate address street fields but rather a single
street address field with line breaks if there are multiple street address
lines. After your export - was HMStreet2 not already blank before you
cleared the field (assuming you mapped Home Street to HMStreet1 on export)?

Creating a new pst and re importing took care of the problem. Thanks!!

Never use the import function to move data from one Outlook to another.
There's no need, and it causes problems.
Why not use the import function?

Importing an entire PST may well corrupt your profile and may create a ghost
PST that you can't close. Importing PST's will lose:
1. Custom Forms
2. Custom Views
3. Connections between contacts and activities
4. Received dates on mail
5. Birthdays and anniversaries in calendar
6. Journal connections
7. Distribution Lists

Opening a PST file will preserve all of these. That is why we do not advise
people to import a native file into Outlook.

Gordon, I miss wrote....I created a new pst file and re imported my contacts
from excel....worked like a champ.

Maybe the excel file is corrupt or something. You may try Advanced
Excel Repair at http://www.datanumen.com/aer/ This tool is rather
useful in salvaging damaged Excel xls files.
