Outlook version?
There is no step in which you "insert" a PST file during a mail merge.
Clarify your post and include exact steps that produce the error.
There is no such error message.

Thank you for your reply. Information as follows:
Version is Outlook verion 2003, part of MS office basic edition 2003.
Steps taken as follows:
In outlook, chose mailmerge option, selected ALL CONTACTS, chose MAILING
LABELS as merge options and chose MERGE TO NEW DOCUMENT.
PC then goes to MS Word and into Mail Merge Helper window.
i chose #1: CREATE MAILING LABELS and then I chose
#2 DATA SOURCE: get data. I chose USE ADDRESS BOOK and chose OUTLOOK ADDRESS
BOOK.
Error message then appears reading: A required file SCHDMAPI.DLL could nto
be loaded. Please check e.mail installation and re-install MS word if
required.

Thank you for your time, much appreicated.

Then it appears I guessed correctly and already posted the solution. Did you
not try it?

This should be an easy remedy to remember in the future. The problem arises
because Word 2003 still relies on the otherwise defunct Mail Merge Helper
from Word 97 to enable you to select your label types. After that, the Mail
Merge Helper is not in play and must be dismissed. Since the next step in
the Helper is to select your data source, you'll know immediately that the
Helper is now misleading you because you already selected your data source
in the first step and cannot select it again--hence the error.
All in all, it's perfectly sloppy programming by the Word developers. Do you
think they got around to correcting it in Word 2007? Not a chance. That's
what makes mail merges one of the most dreaded features in Office's
"integration."

I have read the comments here and simply do not understand how to make the
mail merge for labels work. I apologize. Would you please put it into
dummies terms for me? I tried reloading Word and all of the other
suggestions.
I got the impression that there is a fairly simple solution to this error,
but I guess I'm not tech-savvy enough to understand it.
How do I make this thing work?
Thank you!

You would need to post your Outlook/Word version for specific instructions.
It would also help if you posted what you tried and what happened.
