Default Formating the Phone field with a 1 and no + sign

I am using outlook 2007 (had the same issue with 2003) I keep getting a +
infront of the phone number in the contacts form. When I transfer the data
to my phone the + sign infront ot the phone number envokes a network message.
This also occurs if there is no 1 ifront of the number, how can I format
this field so I can have a number shown in this example: 1(555)555-5555

Under "Dialing Options", de-select "Automatically add country code to local
phone numbers".
