Default "Find" function fails to work on public folder

What would cause the "find" function to stop working on a shared contacts
public folder, even though "advanced find" will still work? If I try to do a
find of a name I know is in the shared contacts public folder, it returns "no
item found". this client had this problem once before and I found/deleted an
entry with no name, but that doesn't appear to be the case this time. the
client is using Outlook 2003 with Exchange server 2003.TIA
