Creating journal entries for historical emails

Unlike Larry G. I'm not on an exchange server, it's just me at home with
Outlook importing from several web-based email accounts.
I want to create journals for certain contacts going back about a year. I
thought I could cheat by backdating the system clock, turning on journalling,
then resetting the clock, but Outlook didn't like that. (hey thinking
outside the box is what I do best, okay).
I know this may be a stupid question but since I left copies of everything
on the servers if Gmail et al, if I turn on journalling then redownload the
emails will they be captured? In other words, is it the date of the email
that matters or the date it is downloaded?
Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks a million.
