Can't Edit Phone Numbers in Outlook 2003 Contacts

Starting a few days ago, I cannot add or edit a telephone number in
existing Outlook 2003 contacts. When I enter a phone number in an
existing entry the digits appear VERY slowly on the screen. When I tab
to the next field the phone number does not reformat (add parentehses
etc.) like it normally does. When I save the entry, the phone number
does not save.

I can create a new contact entry with phone numbers just fine. I seem
to be able to change all other fields in existing entries just fine.

Any suggestions are welcome. Right now I have to create a new entry for
a person to change a phone number.

Thanks, Tom

I am running Outlook 2003 with a local PST (not Exchange). I am just
doing email via POP/SMTP. I have been using this PST file for 2 years
without incident until this.
Thanks, Tom

I probably also should have added that I am at SP2 with all the most
recent security, Spam, etc. updates. Maybe I should mention that I have
been getting occasional "illegal address" crashes on first startup in
the morning since the last major security update. But never twice in a
row (so far).

Tried any routine maintenance like the Inbox Repair Tool or creating a new
profile?
What's the size of your PST file?

Thanks for pointing me to the Inbox Repair Tool. I guess I have been
fortunate, using Outlook for many years and did not know about that.

The Repair Tool found numerous errors and repaired them.
The bad news is that did not solve the problem.

The really good news is that I downloaded a new update of Plaxo (really
useful but has caused some problems before) and the problem seems to
have gone away. So I am declaring it cured and hope that documenting
this may help others. But I'll be back if the fix was an illusion.

Thanks for your help! Tom

P.S. My PST is about 360Meg, the Contacts folder is less than 1 Meg

Where in any of your prior posts did you ever mention you were using Plaxo?
Plaxo has a well-known history of causing problems with Outlook and you
should always remove any add-ins prior to claiming Outlook is the culprit.

Brian,
With all due respect I think you should chill out.
I did not mention Plaxo because I did not realize it was relevant - I
certainly did not have your superior knowledge of Outlook and addins.
And I don't recall claiming Outlook was the culprit, only that I was
having a problem with Outlook.

Thanks, everyone, for graciously helping a novice.
Cheers, Tom

Any time you have an add-in it's relevant.
