Default New mail alerts

Why do alerts go away after 30 seconds?
If I'm away from my desk when an email comes in, the alert comes up and goes
away before I get back so I am never notified of new mail.

This should be configurable so it will stay up as long as I want whether it
be 30 seconds or 30 days!
