I was having problems with my computer, which I assumed were related to the
recent installation of the MS OFFICE 2007 Trial. I uninstalled the program from the Add/Remove Programs utility in the control panel. Then I reinstalled my 2003 from ages back. Outlook would not open -- indicating there was no e-mail information and I should go to the Mail icon and add the relevant data file -- which I did, but could not find. I then Uninstalled 2003, and reinstalled my 2007 trial version. This time, using Explore to find all *.pst files, I was able to find an old archived version of my contact folder, which I now have installed. I have not, as yet, reinstalled my e-mail information as my internet was down at the time. The issue is that my calendar, tasks and notes are GONE! (the obvious lesson is backup) I found information on locating the *.pst files -- but nothing to let me know what format the other items are stored in so that I might find them (I had supposed they were part of the *.pst but they aren't -- I guess from what I see in front of me). Please advise how I might find something on my hard drive which will approximate even old files and retreive my calendar, notes and task files. Thanks |

Uninstalling any Outlook version will not delete your folder data. By default, PSTs are in the hidden folder %UserProfile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook. Open Windows Explorer and enter thatt string in the Address field. Click Go. I'll bet your PST is there. -- Brian Tillman |

Yes, I did that. And, I did find the *.pst files. And, I did use the data
management screen to bring them into OL2007. I was more concerned that my Calendar, tasks and notes were missing. I've spent a lot of time reading up on "profiles." This helped. I would suggest a data flow chart for Outlook. It would have certainly helped me. Much easier to digest a chart than reading for 4 hours and missing salient points by mistake. My data did come back. To me it's magic. It was not there, and the next morning it was there. However, it's not where it used to be -- Now I have several .pst files and well, they're basically in different folders. The funny thing for the calendars is that sometimes when I open all the calendars, there is a blank one, and my "missing" old data. Other times, only the blank one opens. Go figure. Not confidence building -- right now I'm in serious printing mode, making sure I have paper copies of everything that's in that file. It's time for a back up and clean out! Thanks for the information -- but it didn't really answer the question. It has been a very long day, reading, attempting to move my *.pst file to my
laptop, without success. I imagine that you too get tired of the entire process. I don't know why such a simple program to use on a daily basis can become such a nightmare to use for what should be more simple functions. I've read the sarcastic responses to poor users who do their best to follow the directions, and there's always something missing, which trips us up! People who write how to do this stuff should do it step by step. For instance, the memo on how to copy a *pst file to another machine or drive or whatever. I'm an administrator on all my computers. I copied the *pst to a CD (both a RW and a Ronly), I made sure the "read only" box was not checked. But when it copied the copy properties are "read only" and I am advised I do not have authorizations to make changes. The instrutions state you have to make sure the read only box is not checked! But, there's obviously something else in the process that's just not written up. And, no, my calendar was not in the same folder that my contacts ended up being in. Go figure. It sometimes is more like living in the Twilight Zone with some of these products. And, yes, I'm incredible frustrated after spending 8+ hours on this problem and getting no where. Because of some incompatibility on my XP Professional computer (where my outlook resides), and my new, wonderful, but now usless IPAQrx5915 which uses Microsoft Moble (not CE), and the new Sync software can't get through something that is on my system -- I've uninstalled every firewall, every anti-virus, every ad-ware program that ever was put on my machine, but something stray is preventing me from being able to sync my IPAQ to my outlook -- BUT -- it works on my XP Home system! BUT, I can't get my data files transported. So, YEP I'm very frustrated. But there's no competition out there that I know of, so I'll just keep working the problem, even when someone tells me something I've already done and know about! Have some sympathy for us poor slucks out here who unfortunately miss the most important part of doing thngs sometimes, not because we're stupid, but because there's too much going on, and not enough truly elucid writeups! Thanks for the help so far, but even so I'm still in a bind. "Brian Tillman" wrote: Datacas wrote: Yes, I did that. And, I did find the *.pst files. I don't know why such a simple program to use on a daily basis can become such a nightmare to use for what should be more simple functions. This article is a fairly clear description of how to move Outlook data around: http://www.howto-outlook.com/howto/backupandrestore.htm I've read the sarcastic responses to poor users who do their best to follow the directions, There are no sarcastic comments to anyone in this thread. and there's always something missing, which trips us up! People who write how to do this stuff should do it step by step. Since we're all just regular users, we don't always have the time to post completely detailed step-by-step descriptions. It's well-known that ANYTHING you put on a CD is, by definition, read-only, even if the CD is a CD-RW. It must be copied to the hard drive first before the read-only attribute can be removed. The instrutions state you have to make sure the read only box is not checked! But, there's obviously something else in the process that's just not written up. Like what? What do you think might be missing? Why not write a procedure you think is more complete and post it for others? And, no, my calendar was not in the same folder that my contacts ended up being in. Go figure. Your calendar certainly won't be in the same folder your contacts are in. I never said that. I said your Contacts folder and your Calendar folder (and all the other default Outlook folders like Inbox, Outbox, Notes, Tasks, Sent Items, Deleted Items, and Journal) are all in the same file. You can see that file in FileData File Maintenance and in ToolsE-mail AccountsNext. If your calendar folder is not in the same PST as your contacts folder, you moved it. Outlook cannot. It will ALWAYS use the folders in the delivery location PST (ToolsE-mail AccountsNext - the "Delivery new e-mail to the following location" drop-down). It sometimes is more like living in the Twilight Zone with some of these products. That's true enough. When you created the second partnership (assuming you're using ActiveSync), did you tell ActiveSync you want to sync with two PCs? So, YEP I'm very frustrated. But there's no competition out there that I know of, so I'll just keep working the problem, even when someone tells me something I've already done and know about! If you were to list exactly what you've done so far, those who suggest solutions can avoind the repetition. Have some sympathy for us poor slucks out here who unfortunately miss the most important part of doing thngs sometimes, not because we're stupid, but because there's too much going on, and not enough truly elucid writeups! You have the sympathy of many. When you're finished, things work, and you've gained all this experience, create the lucid writeup you believe if lacking. Others will benefit from your experience. -- Brian Tillman |
