Default I'm losing Emails!

I have my Outlook '03 Email set up thru a POP/SMTP, with a local cable
company, and have noticed 2 problems. When Outlook receives my emails, it
"pulls them out" of my cable email acount permanently. Worse yet, if the
emails had already been opened ( using my cable co. acct), so "not new", when
retrieving them, Outlook fails to deposit them into my Outlook inbox,
essentially taking it from my cable acct and "losing" them. They are not in
any junk or deleted email files of either program. How do I stop this and
can I retrieve my lost emails????

Either one of two ways:

1. Set Outlook to "Leave a copy of messages on server". This way everything
Outlook downloads is left on the server so it can be viewed with your cable
account (which I assume is a webmail interface, from the way you describe
it). This may not have any effect on Outlook not wanting to download mail
already marked read, however, these messages shouldn't disappear from the
server. You might also want to set either Outlook or your webmail client to
remove messages from the server after a period of time so they don't pile
up.

2. See if you can switch your account from POP3/SMTP to IMAP. The IMAP
service always leaves your messages on the server so they can be accessed
from anywhere. If your ISP offers a webmail interface, there's a good
chance he can offer you IMAP service also.

As designed. That's how POP works by default. Open your account's
properties pages (ToolsE-mail AccountsNext, select the account, click
ChangeMore Settings) and on the Advanced tab, select the option to leave
copies on the server. Keep in mind, though, you'll need to use the web
interface periodically to delete messages from the server if you don't want
it to fill up and stop accepting mail.

Outlook has no idea whether or not you've read your messages using the ISP's
web interface. It can't because POP protocols simply don't transmit that
information between the client and server. If it appears they are handled
differently, then it's the ISP's issue, not Outlook's. You'll have to ask
the ISP about it.
